Dr. Martin's Story

about technical adjusting

About my story...

I graduated from Palmer College in 1977 and absolutely fell in love with the idea of hands-on Chiropractic, adjusting, being of service, and giving people the best opportunity to experience health naturally.

I loved the Palmer education, the Palmer package, and the techniques. Initially, my inclination was looking at Pettibon and later CBP. Upper cervical adjusting also made a lot of sense. My favorite full spine adjusting was Gonstead technique, with a small amount of diversified, drop, flexion-distraction and Logan basic.

My curiosity had a strange direction. While in school, I had a low back problem that presented, which was likely, looking back, from a kidney stone.

I got adjusted for weeks without any noticeable improvement and was getting to the point where I could hardly walk to class.

Then someone suggested that I see
Dr. Chris Kent, who was a young, bright instructor at that time.

I sought, I asked, and he agreed to see me in his private clinic across the street from Palmer college. It was a basement affair, very old fashioned, and he had me lay on a table, face down, did a rather quick assessment, applied a very light force, and said I was done. It was my first Toftness-style adjustment.

Within an hour, I began sweating profusely, which continued all night long, and I woke up dripping wet the next morning. My back pain was gone; the kidney stone likely passed in the night.

I was curious, but didn’t give it much more thought… until about 2 years later. I was licensed and practicing in Anchorage, Alaska, when a traveling female D.C. visited my clinic. She said she was a Toftness-style practitioner. I had her adjust me and share with me how she thought it worked.

Another year went by, again, not giving it much thought. Sometime in the late 1970’s, I gave Dr. I.N. Toftness a call. He said that if I came and spent 9 days with him, I would either “get it” or not. No guarantees.

The cost was approximately $3,000 for the training. Taking 9 days off from a busy clinic to fly to Cumberland, Wisconsin was not an easy consideration. However, 6 months later, I scheduled and went. I was several days into the training and it was not coming together for me. Dr. Toftness would stand over me, grab my hand and say, “palpate it like this, this is what you are looking for.” On Day 8, I finally started to see what he was teaching.

It has been an interesting 47+ years since that moment. The results and the ability and desire to continue to care about people still exists.

Many of you may know about Averio Health Institute and the results we are seeing. A big part of concentrated care results is our ability to carefully find the most significant interference to structure and neurology and make technical adjustments.

Many Chiropractors have asked to come and learn our technique.

For about 3 years, I have been contemplating what an organized teaching seminar should look like. Well, it’s time.
